The PSI ITCS has secure multi-user capability which allows a group of transport operators, providing services in the same or adjacent areas, to co-operate in the operation of AVMS, RTPI etc. whilst maintaining fully independent control of the commercial aspects of their business.
Service operations and passenger information can be controlled by each company in the group independently for its own vehicles or, by agreement e.g. in off peak hours, one operator can take over the control of operations and information for another, or for all of the operators in the consortium.
The advantages of such collaboration are both in economy and in efficiency. A shared central system is very cost effective where there are larger and smaller operators involved. Costs can be apportioned according to vehicle numbers; sometimes the onboard hardware is leased or rented from the consortium. Consistent presentation of information to passengers, connection data, and geographical rather than operator specific disruption/diversion data all helps to improve the attractiveness of public transport.
